7 Reasons Why You Need to Carry Cash with You When You Travel

I just returned from an extended trip in Turkiye. While I always have US dollars with me, it's advisable to carry a stash of local currency with you. In this case, I carried both euros and Turkish Lira, TRY with me just to  be safe. The good news is that you can keep unused euros for other trips as that's a common currency. However, in Turkey, the local currency is often the only one accepted. You'll want to manage the amount of Turkish lira that you keep with you, as they are pretty much useless outside of Turkey.

Here are my reasons for keeping cash with you at all times, particularly local currency.

Attractions: Popular tourist sites like Galata Tower requested cash. Don’t count on using credit cards as we do in most locations.

Shopping: You can often get a better price if you purchase with cash. While it may seem inconvenient, if you have an ATM card that has no fees, this is advisable. You can save as much as 15% on your splurges.

Public Restrooms: Small change is advisable here. Many WC’s require payment if they’re not in hotels or restaurants. They will usually provide change of a large bill, but that is definitely not their preference.

Taxis: Taxis don’t always accept credit cards. As I found out the hard way, they may say they take credit cards and then the credit card machine mysteriously doesn't work because "there's no internet."  You'll be asked for cash at an iffy price. Have cash regardless or you may find yourself stuck without transportation. Also, you shouldn’t count on Uber being available or even accepting credit cards. Be prepared.

ATMs or cash exchanges: These don’t always work. You need to be careful about withdrawing money from reputable ATMs. These are ones that usually have Visa, Mastercard and other familiar logos on them. I spent way too much time calling my banks to ensure that my cards would be usable in Turkey, and this was even having notified them that I was going to be traveling internationally prior to my trip.

Tips: You’ll need to have a supply of cash for tips at restaurants, hotels and other locations. Be a good traveler and recognize a job well done with a cash tip. Housekeepers, servers, bellboys and doormen among others will be very grateful.

Snacks and Vendors: Many street vendors offer delicious (and cheap) snacks that you’ll certainly want to enjoy. Cash is mandatory here, so keep plenty on hand.
